THE INSPIRATION for this book:

Nelson Mandela once said “No matter where you are in life, there’s always more journey ahead.” One of Mandela’s favorite quotes, from the poem Invictus, sustained him when he thought his journey had been cut short. “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.”

This quote inspired me to create this book, because I want to help you, the aspiring photographer, on your journey to master photography and become the captain of your camera.

HOW THIS BOOK HELPS YOU:

I have a theory that you can master 80% of most fields if you know the 12 most important factors. Let's take, for example, photography. If you knew the 12 concepts of what camera to buy, what lens to buy, what time of day to shoot photos, where to stand, and what to include in the frame, then when you learned all 12 you could take a picture that would look pretty close to professional quality.

Captain of your Camera explains the most important factors in a clear and simple way. They are presented clearly and with illustrations so you can understand each factor in about 5 minutes. With 12 factors total, you can finish reading this book in about 60 minutes. It’s like taking a complete photography course, but at an accelerated pace and at your convenience.

At the end of each section there is a quick practice step called “Now Do This” that challenges you to take an actionable step to make sure you understand before you move on.

I encourage you to dream about taking better photos and know we can make it come true.

I realize it has been hard to figure out all the controls on your DSLR and that photo classes often give you teaching that doesn’t fit with how you learn.

You may fear that learning how to use your DSLR is difficult — but in reality, it’s easy and fun.

Your suspicions are correct: the manual that came with you camera was too confusing! It was written by engineers, not a photographer. That’s why it did not help you. This eBook was written by a photographer to help you learn what really matters.

Let me help you ignore the people who obsess about megapixels and the latest cameras. The technical details of a camera have nothing to do with the art of making remarkable images.

I want to help you use your camera to make beautiful photos that are pretty close to professional quality.
